Celebrate Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Day in Boston and Beyond

This year’s Read Across America Day – an annual reading awareness program that celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday – takes place on Thursday, March 2, 2017. Boston’s biggest bookworms will wear striped pajamas and “The Cat in the Hat” hats in recognition of the author’s colorful cast of characters. Many celebrations will occur throughout the city, here are a few events in the region to consider attending that honor one of America’s greatest storytellers.

Enjoy Story Time at the Prudential Center

Barnes and Noble at the Prudential Center, 800 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02199

In celebration of the beloved author’s birthday, Barnes and Noble will host a celebration with readings of a number of Seuss classics, as well as newer releases. Guests will also enjoy games and activities, including Dr. Seuss’s March Battle of the Books.

Eat Green Eggs and Ham at Saus

33 Union Street, Boston, MA 02108

Situated on a quiet corner of Union Street, across from Boston City Hall, Saus serves homemade street food, with comfort food favorites like hand-cut fries, corn dogs and crispy chicken bites. However, the restaurant’s green eggs and ham is, perhaps, the most famous item on its menu. This unusual dish, inspired by Seuss’ 1960 book of the same name, combines pork belly, Brussels sprouts, bacon parm and a deep fried egg. This Read Across America Day, head to Saus and check out the doctor’s most famous delicacy.

Visit the Dr. Seuss Memorial in Springfield

Escape the hustle and bustle of Boston and visit the quiet town of Springfield, Massachusetts – Dr. Seuss’ hometown. The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss – a huge museum dedicated to the life and work of the celebrated author – is expected to open here in June 2017. Until then, you can check out the Dr. Seuss Memorial on Edwards Street, a large bronze statue surrounded by towering trees. This Read Across America Day, expect fans of the writer to flock to the memorial.

Go for a Seuss Story Walk at the Children’s Discovery Museum

177 Main Street, Acton, MA 01720

Located in a Victorian house in suburban Acton, just outside of Boston, the Children’s Discovery Museum marks Read Across America Day with a roster of Seuss-themed events. There’s a story walk, for guests to explore the museum campus and find a secluded spot to flick through “Fox in Socks” or “Hop on Pop.” From 10 a.m. through 11 a.m., little ones can gather in the main building for a drop-in story time.

Boston’s schools, bookstores and libraries will participate in this year’s Read Across America Day – and you can get involved, too. Pay tribute to the man behind the Grinch, green eggs and Gertrude McFuzz, and join other literature lovers from across Boston.
